Edwin Diaz carried off field after suffering leg injury celebrating World Baseball Classic win

Mets closer Edwin Diaz appeared to suffer an injury on the field immediately after Team Puerto Rico upset Dominican Republic, 5-2, in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night.

Diaz, who recorded the final out in the victory, was carted off the field and appeared to not put much weight on his right leg.

Diaz sat on the field, without much motion, as his teammates called for assistance near the mound. Players on both teams looked on as the closer waited for assistance.

Alexis Diaz, Edwin’s brother and teammate, was seen shedding tears as the closer was taken off the field.

The 28-year-old signed a five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets in November, making him the richest reliever in baseball history.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.
