Iranian women hold up scissors gesture in defiance of regime before England clash

Iran fans have been pictured outside a Qatar stadium protesting against their nation’s regime ahead of their World Cup clash with England this afternoon.

Women dressed in red, white and green to symbolise the Iranian flag held posters with slogans saying ‘Women. Life. Freedom’ and ‘Freedom for Iran’.

Some used a scissors gesture sign in a show of defiance against Iran as part of ongoing protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini.

They posed outside Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar capital Doha on Monday afternoon.

And some of Iran’s football squad have bravely offered their support to fellow citizens as they prepare to face the Three Lions –defying the risk of speaking out publicly.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun posted on Instagram: ‘At worst I’ll be dismissed from the national team.
