The security guard at the Masjid ur-Rahmah in Surrey had to direct latecomers to the basement overflow prayer room as worshippers jammed the mosque’s main room for afternoon prayers on Friday.

”Let’s stand up and show your patience and show the world we’re a peaceful people,” said Imam Abdar Rahman Khan at the mosque’s first prayer service after the New Zealand mosque shootings.

“My Islam is telling me to live in peace,” he told the 175 worshippers who gathered to pray, some wearing robes, others business suits, track suits or jeans.

They gathered at the small Surrey mosque for Friday prayers. Friday is the most important prayer day of the week for Muslims.

Before the service, Khan said it would have been the same Friday prayers their Muslim brothers were gathering for in New Zealand, “when we have a crowd,” when the gunmen opened fire at two Christchurch mosques, killing at least 49, and injuring many others.

“Being a Muslim, we are all afraid and we are shocked,” said Khan. “Our mosque is a place of peace, where we worship. We have no arms. We pray peacefully.”
