Watch: Jason Kenney proposes creating new minimum wage for Alberta’s youth

United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney announced that his party would create a new youth wage as part of the UCP’s proposed Bill 2, during a press conference at an Edmonton bakery Friday morning.

If elected, the UCP plans to roll out a $13-per-hour minimum wage for young workers, $2 less than the minimum wage that took effect in October.

“The majority of people who receive the minimum wage are dependents or in households with other sources of income,” said UCP Leader Jason Kenney at a Friday news conference held at Vienna Bakery, an Edmonton business. “We’re basically talking about teenagers with entry-level jobs.”

The lesser wage would apply to people 17 years of age and under.
