REAL SCOOP: Man linked to Brothers Keepers shot at training centre

Just months after his brother Harb survived a Richmond shooting, Meninder Dhaliwal was wounded by gunfire outside a longshore workers training centre on Mitchell Island March 23.

Both men, originally from Abbotsford, are linked to the Brothers Keepers gang, which is currently in conflict across Metro Vancouver with former allies-turned rivals in the Kang-Red Scorpion group.

Richmond RCMP was called to the B.C. Maritime Employers Association about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning after reports that a man had been shot.

The training centre is in the 11000-block of Twigg Place on Mitchell Island.

“A witness reported seeing a man, dressed in black fleeing the area on foot,” RCMP Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in a news release.

“Upon arrival at the scene, frontline officers discovered a 25-year-old man suffering from serious, potentially life threatening injuries. He has been transported to a local area hospital and is receiving treatment.”

She said that a short time later, Richmond RCMP received a report of a vehicle on fire in the 5600-block of No. 7 Road.

“At this point, we are asking anyone who may have been a witness to either of these incidents and have not already spoken with police, to contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212,” Shoihet said.

Police did not release the name of the wounded man, but I confirmed it was Dhaliwal with several sources.

In December, Harb Dhaliwal was shot at Richmond’s Lansdowne Mall and also survived. At the time, he was with his friend and gang associate Bicky Khakh, who was then gunned down in Surrey Feb. 1 at his family home.

Both men are brothers of former Red Scorpion Barinder (Shrek) Dhaliwal, an Abbotsford gang member sentenced to a year in jail last June after being seen tossing a firearm into some bushes in 2016.

He is expected to be released from prison shortly.
