Kavanaugh Confirmation Hearing to Start Sept. 4

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said Friday the confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court will begin Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Grassley (pictured right above) expects a three or four-day hearing that will result in a close vote to send the nomination to the full Senate where a final debate will be held in mid to late September. Kavanaugh is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate, perhaps with support from one or two Democrats.

Carrie Severino, chief counsel and policy director for the Judicial Crisis Network, expects the process to move steadily forward, despite Democrat demands for more time to evaluate Kavanaugh’s record.

“Democrats have already announced that they oppose him, so this claim that they need more time or more documents is nothing more than a show, a fishing expedition designed to obstruct and create gridlock.,” she said. “Judge Kavanaugh has been endorsed by leading figures on the Right and the Left. He is a mainstream nominee who will base his decisions on the law and the Constitution.”

Jenny Beth Martin, chairman of the Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund, said continuing demands from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for millions of documents from Kavanaugh’s tenure prior to being appointed to the federal bench working for President George W. Bush is a delaying tactic.

“Liberal Democrats don’t need more time to review Judge Kavanaugh’s record, they just don’t like the fact that his record shows he is fair, independent and adheres to the Constitution, so they are now resorting to obstruction and gridlock to extend their fishing expedition,” Martin said.
