Brian Minter: B.C.-grown cut flowers will brighten your day

One of the great pleasures of summer is filling our homes and cottages with beautiful flowers, either cut from our own gardens or locally grown.

It’s the only time of year you can find a wide selection of colourful outdoor varieties, ranging from sunflowers, veronicas and delphiniums to vibrant dahlias and so much more. The enjoyment cut flowers add to summer living can’t be overstated.

According to Bob Pringle, CEO of Burnaby’s United Flower Growers, there are over 60 cut flower growers in B.C. Three times a week, starting at 6 a.m., the company’s flower auction sells and distributes millions of cut flowers across Canada and the U.S.

Seventy per cent of the flowers sold at the auction are “cuts”, and they represent a growing commodity. Those of us who live in the Lower Mainland really benefit from having this fresh supply of flowers readily available. In just a few hours, these flowers have transitioned from the grower to the marketplace.

The Van Gameren family has been growing flowers in Chilliwack for over 30 years.

For our granddaughter’s wedding, our daughter visited Chilliwack cut-flower growers Van Gameren Flowers. She was looking for some specific colours, and she came away very impressed with the passion and skill needed to grow a diversity of exceptionally beautiful flowers, something the Van Gameren family has been doing for over 30 years.
