Plea for CCTV to catch people littering on Aberdeen street


A petition has been launched for CCTV cameras to be installed in an Aberdeen city centre street.

Entitled Clean Up Adelphi, the petition to Aberdeen City Council has asked for the cameras to be put up to catch people making a mess of the street.

The petition argues the current state of Adelphi is a health risk to residents and claims people are going through bins and causing a mess on the street.

It reads: “It is a risk to people’s health and wellbeing and it’s disgusting. It is almost weekly that I walk out my flat and see the mess of the bins because people are going through the bins and not cleaning up the mess.”

The campaign was created by 22-year-old Mhari MacLachlan, an Adelphi resident.

She said: “I have been living in Adelphi since the end of June last year.

“It was absolutely fine for the first couple of months, but recently it has become a huge problem.

“I’m constantly walking out of my flat and seeing so much mess around the communal bins.

“It doesn’t look like mess that’s been made by seagulls going through the bins.

“There have been bigger things like washing machines left outside as well and there was one time when someone had left a television set just dumped there.

“People have also been using the area as a toilet all the time, which is just horrible.”

Mhari, who works as a catering assistant at Aberdeen University, said she had contacted the city council regarding the matter, but hadn’t heard back.

She said: “It’s a really bad situation and it makes me feel unsafe in my own flat.”

Mhari has said that having CCTV installed would put her at ease and help to stop the situation.

“CCTV would really help make me feel more secure when I’m at home,” she said.
