The Los Gatos High School softball squad clinched a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division co-championship with a 10-0 six-inning victory over Monta Vista last Wednesday. It is the team’s first league title since 1993, said Wildcats head coach Randy Frey.
Los Gatos and Mountain View both finished the De Anza Division season with 10-2 records for co-champion status, but the Wildcats were 2-0 against the Spartans this season so Los Gatos got the automatic bid to the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. Los Gatos (19-7-1 overall), the No. 6 seed, hosts No. 3 Watsonville (22-3) on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a quarterfinal game.
The Wildcats received a five-hit shutout from Erin Kiuttu and a solo home run from Mira Sharma in the victory over Monta Vista. Sharma also had a double and was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, who had 16 hits in the win. Alaana Panu added two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI for Los Gatos.
Annika Briski was 2 for 3 with three RBI, and Ava Currie also had two hits, including a double, a run scored and two RBI. Macy Zech added a 2 for 2 game for the Wildcats, and Amber Kelly was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Westmont will also be playing in the CCS playoffs. The Warriors are the No. 10 seed in the Division II bracket and will travel to face No. 7 Notre Dame-Belmont on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The Warriors, who enter the CCS playoffs with a 17-9 overall record, finished their Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division schedule with a 7-4 victory over Willow Glen last Friday. Westmont took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning and did not trail in the game.
