Watch: Pro-Europe campaigners in Aberdeen event calling for public to get vote on Brexit deal


Campaigners calling for the public to be given a vote on the final Brexit deal have been out in force across the country – including in Aberdeen.

Activists were outside the Bon Accord and St Nicholas shopping centre speaking to residents.

A People’s Vote campaign has been launched, calling for Britain to hold a ballot on the final deal for the UK’s departure from the European Union.

Actor Patrick Stewart was among celebrities, MPs and business leaders who launched the national campaign with a rally in London yesterday.

The day of action was organised by the European Movement, Open Britain and Britain for Europe, with more than 100 events taking place across the country.

Leaflets were distributed on St Nicholas Street by members of Open Britain.

Dave Duguid, spokesman for Open Britain in Aberdeen, said: “It’s great to be out campaigning in Aberdeen alongside other pro-European activists and talking to local people about making sure they get a say on the Brexit deal.

“With Brexit turning out to be much more complicated and costly than people were told during the referendum, and the consequences still unclear, we are demanding a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”

Another volunteer with the group told the Evening Express they spoke to a broad range of people with different political views on Saturday. He said: “When we first voted on whether to leave the European Union or not we didn’t know what it would look like.

“Within a minute of opening our stall we had some EU nationals who are living in the city come up to us and say that they were worried about their position here and whether they were able to stay. We also don’t know the status of British nationals living abroad.
