Vancouver’s Roundhouse Radio needs cash injection or it will close down at the end of April


Roundhouse Radio, the “urban talk” station broadcasting from downtown Vancouver since October 2015, needs a cash injection or it will go off the air at the end of April.

Station CEO Don Shafer made the announcement to staff on Monday afternoon.

“I teared up a couple of times, that was the hardest day of my career,” Shafer told Postmedia Monday evening.

“But I’m holding out hope. Hope at this stage of the game means trying to find a way to encourage an investor or buyer to believe that a local independent radio station that speaks to his community has merit.”

The station has broadcast for the last two-and-a-half years as a “low-power” station at 98.3 FM using the call letters CIRH. Their spot on the dial puts them between STAR-FM in Chilliwack and the CBC’s Squamish transmitter.

Shafer said his station’s “7 or 8,o00 watts” means it can reach about 1 million listeners, from the North Shore south into Richmond, from UBC to SFU.

While he would like to hit all 2 million-plus listeners in the region, he said hitting half of those listeners was still good and it also drove a “hyper-local” approach.

“We do more local programming than any station in town,” he said. “We serve the city of Vancouver.”

“We have a million people to talk to, the challenge is not content.”

The simple truth is while he sees strong connections being made with listeners, it’s been a challenge connecting with advertisers.

“It takes three to five years for a station to establish itself…it’s still early days for us, it’s a hard process.”

He pulled his station from Numeris’ listener tracking service because he didn’t see any utility, given the service’s setup.
