All aboard for next term as Inverurie Locos boss Neil hails ‘fantastic season’


Inverurie Locos boss Neil Cooper believes they have had a “fantastic” season.

The Railwaymen finished their campaign with a 3-1 win over Wick Academy on Saturday.

At worst the Harlaw Park side will finish third this term, an improvement on their ninth-placed finish last term.

It has been a season of progress for Locos, and Cooper said: “I think it’s been a fantastic season in terms of consistency in the league.

“When I arrived at the club I assessed the squad and then had to make choices.

“We made those changes to improve us as a team and as a squad, and I think we did that.

“In our fifth game we won 2-1 up at Brora. I said to the boys before the game that they had done well and their performance levels had been very good.

“They just needed a wee break and we got that wee break up there.

“That game gave us a big lift.

“It was the wee break we needed to push the players on.

“This season we’ve had over 100 goals which is the first time the club has done that in the league.

“Defensively, we could finish second with the second best defensive record in the league.

“The creative players have done really well and we’ve got good defenders at the back.

“We’ve had Marc Souter and Greg Mitchell who have played every game for us this season which speaks volumes for them as players.”

Cooper took over in January 2017 and he insists it has been a team effort from everyone connected with Inverurie and they are striving to improve again next season.

He added: “Mike Macaulay the chairman and Graeme Hay the vice-chairman are two great guys who work really hard for the club.
