A man who was killed after running into traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge on Monday night was identified as Malcolm Terrell Melick, 20, of Santa Rosa.

The Marin County coroner’s bureau released Melick’s name Tuesday after his family had been notified.

The incident occurred at about 8:45 p.m. after bridge security officers saw a man on the western sidewalk, a restricted area.

When officers tried to contact him, he ran across the southbound lanes and climbed over the center median barrier, said Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding. Then he went into the northbound lanes, where he was hit by “multiple” vehicles, Fielding said.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The forensic examination and toxicology results are pending.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, which forced police to close all the northbound lanes. One lane was reopened in about an hour and the rest around 11:30 p.m.
