A year after hosting and winning the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League wrestling tournament, Fremont repeated as team champion on Feb. 10 at Los Gatos.
Fremont piled up 215 points to beat host Los Gatos by 10.5 points. It had three wrestlers win their weight classes, and another three wrestlers reach finals in an impressive team performance.
Freshman Erik Puga Lopez won the 106-pound title with a pin of Saratoga’s Linus Blom at one minute, 21 seconds of the final. Fremont’s Puga Lopez, who improved his record to 19-10, won by fall in the quarterfinals and by an 8-5 decision in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
Fremont’s Eli Clark, who was fifth at the Central Coast Section championships last year, won the 132-pound championship match 6-2 over Cupertino’s Miguel Reyes. Clark won by fall and technical fall in his two matches prior to the championship match.
Taniela Feliciano-Takafua, who was second at the CCS Championships last year in the 182-pound division, moved up to the 195-pound weight class and won the SCVAL title Saturday. The Fremont senior had only one match that was not a bye or forfeit, and that occurred in the semifinals when he won by fall at the 19-second mark.
Fremont freshman Branden Bulatao placed second in the 120-pound division. Edwin Martinez Mejia won by three straight falls to reach the 182-pound final, where he was pinned in the third round by Gunn’s Dashiell Lee. Cohle Feliciano also reached the championship match of his division, 285, where he was edged 5-3 by Saratoga’s Allie Liddle.
Cupertino, led by three division winners, placed third as a team with 171 points.
