Pokeatery branching out to Walnut Creek

Pokeatery, the customized poke concept with restaurants in San Mateo and Castro Valley, is expanding to Walnut Creek.

The new store will open by year’s end on Newell Avenue downtown near Broadway Plaza.

It’s the first of three Northern California franchises that Gary Zhu and Julie Ren will operate for founders Joann and Derek Chung, who brought 20 years of sushi restaurant experience to the enterprise. The other city locations haven’t been finalized yet.

Pokeatery gives diners the option of building their own poke boxes around not just the typical ahi, salmon or albacore, but also hamachi or octopus. The kelp noodles are made in-house. Other offerings include pokeado toast, a poke play on avocado toast.

Details: This Pokeatery will be located at 1345 Newell Ave.; the others are in the Lake Chabot Public Market, 18911 Lake Chabot Road in Castro Valley, and at 407 South B St. in downtown San Mateo. www.pokeatery.com.
