Athletes of the week: Top Bay Area performers


South Bay/Peninsula

Darrell Grant, St. Francis

Sport: Football

Position: Running back

Class: Junior

Rushed for 199 yards and five touchdowns in 18 carries as St. Francis advanced to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Open Division II playoffs with a 52-27 victory over Wilcox. The five touchdowns tied the school’s single-game record. Also moved into second place on the school’s season rushing yards list with 1,676, trailing only the 2,007 yards Charles Tharp gained in 1996.

Natalie Ballout, Burlingame

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Middle hitter

Class: Senior

Led Burlingame into the semifinals of the Northern California Division I playoffs. Had 10 kills and nine blocks in her team’s 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 sweep of Lick-Wilmerding in the opening round and 16 kills and 12 blocks in a heart-pounding 23-25, 25-23, 32-30, 30-28 victory over Oak Ridge in the quarterfinals. Ballout entered this week averaging 3.7 kills and 1.7 kills per set.

East Bay

Connor Livingston, De La Salle

Sport: Cross country

Class: Junior

Finished first in the Division II race at the North Coast Section championships, completing the three-mile course at Hayward High in 15 minutes, 01.00 seconds, the fastest time of the competition among all divisions. It has been quite an ascent for the De La salle standout. He took 67th in the Division I race as a freshman and 16th in the Division II race last year.
