Big fire burning on Mitchell Island Thursday evening

A large fire is burning on Mitchell Island — between Vancouver and Richmond — Thursday evening.

Video posted to Twitter show a large blaze on the island, which has already seen two large blazes this year.

One person tweeted that the fire appeared to be at the wrecking yard on the island. “It has cars, tires, gas etc it’s explosion after explosion right now,” they wrote.

Massive fire at #mitchellisland. You can hear many explosions. Maybe the auto wrecker?? @GlobalBC @cbcnewsbc @BT_Vancouver pic.twitter.com/4LcT1vWF4h

Scary scene at #mitchellisland right now. Explosions and massive fire at same auto wrecker lot where this happened 4 months ago. pic.twitter.com/hPZBQ4BZB8

There was a fire on the island at a mattress recycling facility in June and another fire at a scrap yard in January.

Pretty nasty fire on Mitchell Island. Lots of explosions. Neighbours said houses shook in Vancouver. pic.twitter.com/rMGT5uILOu
