Getting up to speed, local business owners get social media savvy

Millennials grew up at the dawn of social media, and for them using it is nearly an innate sense. And a marketers dream. Generations before, however, aren’t necessarily equipped with the ins and outs—and apps—of social media based marketing.

The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce is hoping to change that.

The Chamber is hosting monthly social media workshops on the third Friday of the month through July. The first workshop, “Social Media Success: Best Practices and Action Steps,” is this morning (Friday, April 21) from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office.

The sessions will cover the four most used social media platforms. Facebook, the biggest, with 1.79 billion users worldwide. Instagram, used mainly for photos and videos, has 500 million users and is a fast-growing platform with quick engagement. Twitter is used for sharing information and opinions, with 319 million worldwide users (including all of our elected officials). LinkedIn, with 467 million users, is mostly used for connecting with individuals during job searches or for professional opportunities.

The Chamber’s social media workshops are a bit of an extension of its monthly “Lunch and Learn” workshops, according to Amanda Rosas of the Chamber. The premise of both events is to bring a facilitator in for a topic that would benefit or interest Chamber members.

“My inspiration for this type of workshop is my community, especially here in the Village,” Rosas said. “I’m excited to be able to help my neighbors create more visibility for themselves, and Saratoga. It is a win-win for everyone.”
