Five South Bay and Peninsula immigrants win $90,000 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships


Five South Bay and Peninsula students have been awarded Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, worth up to $90,000 each, to pursue graduate studies.

The fellowships are among 30 awarded nationally to immigrants and children of immigrants who are pursuing graduate degrees and could make significant contributions to U.S. society and culture. They were chosen from among 1,775 applicants.

The awardees include Ellora Thadaney Israni, an alumna of Menlo-Atherton High, who is studying at Harvard Law School; Roxana Moussavian, a Palo Alto High graduate, who is studying at Yale Law School; Ashvin A. Swaminathan, an alumnus of The Harker School in San Jose who is studying in number theory at Princeton University; Pratyusha Kalluri, who is studying computer science at Stanford University and Amin Aalipour, who is studying bioengineering at Stanford.
